Ghost In The Shell
Ghost in the Shell is one of the most influential cult classic anime movies that first aired back in November 1995 and directed by Mamoru Oshii. The anime is set in a futuristic cyberpunk world where the technology is advanced enough that people can replace their body parts with robotic counterparts. With the advanced civilization, the world is more connected. The city’s public security section 9 is the one who is responsible for the order and combating crimes such as corruption, terrorism, and other dangerous threats.
Following the success of the first adaptation which is a movie, it is then followed with many different sequels and spinoffs, and also the different dimensional styles of the anime throughout the years which is even followed by a live-action Hollywood Film starring Scarlett Johansson - making it complicated for the newcomers about the watch order for the series.
Motoko Kusanagi of section 9 initiated to do a case about a mysterious hacker called “Puppet Master”. What this hacker does is strip the memories of its victims because of its power of having a body that is mostly robotic. Major Motoko together with her subordinates decided to confront this case.
Ghost in the Shell explores philosophical themes such as existentialism, the ethical dilemma of artificial intelligence, free will versus determinism, and the nature of identity. Overall, it questions the meaning of life revolving around robotic technology and how humanity portrays itself as the boundary of humans and machines is getting way too close.
